Biogeek Elfar

Biogeek Elfar

After a PhD in Bioinformatics at the University of Copenhagen and a position as a research scientist at Santaris Pharma, Elfar is now a Biogeek.

Elfar started his bioinformatics career within the exciting world of Archaea and later moved into the expanding world of structural non-coding RNAs. Elfar is one of the major users of computer power in Denmark, ranking high at several Danish super-computing clusters.

Elfar enjoys web programming and sports in his free time and has implemented numerous websites.

Elfar lives together with his wife in Copenhagen.

Biogeek Troels

Biogeek Troels

Troels recently received his PhD from the Bioinformatics Centre and Biological Research and Innovation Centre at Copenhagen University. Here his work concentrated on sequence analysis and gene-regulation.

He is now enjoying a postdoctoral position at Princeton University in John Storeys group.

He finds Princeton to be a small and charming city, and so does his wife and son.

Picture of the biogeek Stinus

Biogeek Stinus

Stinus started out in the field of computer science, in which he has a Bachelor’s degree, but finished with a Master’s in bioinformatics from the University of Copenhagen. He is currently doing a Ph.D under the supervision of Anders Krogh.

Stinus has extensive programming experience – especially with C++ – and has previously been working as a teaching assistant in algorithmics at the computer science department. He also has teaching experience from various bioinformatics courses. His research has mainly been focused on structural RNAs, but he has also been involved in other projects covering e.g. phylogeny and genome assembly.

When he isn’t busy doing geeky stuff, he might be enjoying a good whisky, working for his microbrewery “Djævlebryg” or debating creationists. Stinus lives north of Copenhagen together with his girlfriend, Mirjam, and their son, Thore.

Biogeek Anders

Anders is soon to finish his PhD – also supervised by Anders Krogh at the University of Copenhagen. His work covers computational analysis of microRNAs and their targets using data mining and machine learning techniques.

Prior to starting his PhD, he received his Bachelor Degree by studying Computer Science and Sports Science (you can learn a lot from a game of football!) before continuing doing a Masters at the Bioinformatics Centre, Copenhagen University.

Anders lives together with his girlfriend in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, where he enjoys going for a run in the hilly park Søndermarken.

Biogeek Morten

Biogeek-advisor Morten

Morten is a biogeek-advisor. Morten’s daytime job is at Santaris Pharma, where he is a group leader for a small bioinformatics group. He has been with Santaris since early 2007 and is managing both bioinformatics and wet-lab projects. He has created many useful geektools as well as novel ways to analyze and manage research data.

Morten has a master’s degree in human biology and did his Ph.d. with Anders Krogh at the Bioinformatics Centre in Copenhagen, from where he also has extensive teaching experience both as project supervisor/coach and as lecturer.

He lives with his son and ‘wife’ in a small urban village in Copenhagen.
